Get Good at One Thing
I am in a reflective mood today.
I didn’t really intend for this to be a personal blog, so I will try and stay on the “business” topics as much as I can. Having said that, I want to say that after breaking my foot (through forgetting how to run properly) and breaking up with my girl friend in the last week. I have found myself getting very reflective and approaching my life, plans and business in a new light. Bare with me here, because I truly believe that there is a relevant and worth while point worth taking from this spiel I am about to create:
I broke my foot, I broke up with the girl I loved, and I find myself spending some time back with my family during a very lonley part of my life. The injury affects my ability to socialize and keep busy, and the break up with my girl friend has left me feeling pretty sad. It has been an emotionally and physically demanding week but it has also been bitter-sweet. My brother, who has been subjected to a number of life threatening operations in his time, turned 18 on Friday. I went back home to celebrate with him and it was an emotional time for me, my Dad and Mum. It was a great weekend for my two younger brothers who perhaps did not appreciate what a miracle it is for him to be with us today.
Having been on a roller-coaster ride this weekend, I find myself very disconnected and thoughtful. I have been able to look at a number of things in a very objective manner. I like to think that after all the mental clutter of the last week, I have finally cleared my mind and I am able to think clearly. I accept that the unusual events of the last week may still be causing my thinking to be a little hazey but bare with me as I share with you a quick story and insight that I think might help you.
Get Good at One Thing!
Last week the office was a buzz about a competitor in our digital marketing industry. Our financial guys thought this might be a cool business to add to the company portfolio. They signed the NDA’s and checked out the business model. I am not party to all the information, but what I do know is, the business model of this particular company was VERY simple but was generating turnovers in the millions after a couple of years of running. They got good, famous, competent and known for doing ONE very simple thing, that they replicated over and over, and over again. They found a formula that worked, scaled it up and profited BIG TIME from it. Smart cookies.
The thing is, it is the same for everyone else. Don’t over-complicate things. Just keep them simple, focus on one thing, get good at it, get known for doing it and make money from it. Once you have got that formula down, move into other things, but only once you got the bread and butter down and sorted! Do that one thing first that makes you money, expand and exploit it and move on.
Why Are They Better Than Me?
Let me take an egotistical moment here. I believe myself to be some one of average to just above average intelligence. I have a degree in law from a very good University in England and I consider myself thoughtful and analytical. I keep up-to-date on current affairs and do my best to research things I involve myself in as thoroughly as I can. I am a creative person and a morally-balanced person (I like to think). I am not any different to a lot of other people I know, and if you are reading this, you might be able to relate to this in some way.
Let me speak candidly, despite all the above, I have not been able to turn into a business project into a solo raging success yet. There are school drop outs, and dare I say it, IDIOTS (I have met them) out there who are doing a lot better than me, who are seeing a huge more amount of success than me. People who have taken more risks and opportunities than me are winning and making a killing. Have you ever observed similar patterns?
There are two reasons for this:
1. My morals prevent me from selling some of the crap to people that others are pedaling. I could not sleep at night doing what some of these “millionaires” and “internet gurus” are doing. I really couldn’t. And this moral code and my ethics prevent me from making A LOT of empty meaningless dollars.
2. Thinking people find it very tough to make a success of schemes, plans and business ideas. A thinking/educated person often weighs up risks and constraints, and often decides the risk is too great and the returns not high enough to embark on some ventures. They weigh up the pro’s and cons, they recognize they have a lot to lose and often decide it is not worth it. Some one whose back to the wall, or has little to lose does not waste time pondering and thinking conceptually about the idea, they just do it. This is not always a good thing, but it works and there is a lot to be said for that.
I often think too much, over-complicate things and think too long about them. Others are keeping it simple, basic, perfecting it and just doing it. That is the power of getting good at just one thing.
Don’t over-think it.
Identify your dreams and chase them.
Keep it simple, get good at it, replicate and dominate!
That is the business lesson I am taking away from this week, this month and this year. What do you think? Do you agree? Feel free to leave some comments below.
I am off to go get good.

Didn’t know about you and your girlfriend mate. I’m sorry to hear that. You know where I am if you want to chat about anything at all.
P.S Let’s get good and dominate!

Beautifully written. I too can relate to this article. As you know, I am well educated but I don’t worry so much worry about the risks, as I know I have support and family that will always back me up and give me shelter and food.
For me personally, it is the company. I always need a friend or someone to go along on my journey, I can never do something alone. I hate it. This is why I always come to a dead end. I know I want to be a musician, but as I can’t sing, I know by just playing the guitar it will only get me so far. From observation of what really earns money, are those who are in bands. Those who get signed, or those who know how to promote their music online. I’m slowly getting tired of SEO work, and want to persue music. What do you suggest? I have the skills of it all but… I don’t really know what is holding me back. I have a dilhemma, of staying in India til 04 Feb, or just finishing it at Xmas..and moving onto my dream.
p.s hope the foot will get better, happy birthday to your bro, what will be the one good thing your after? and… I think you should write personal blogs on your other site.
Also its wierd why we don’t take risks, as we have nothing to really lose, because we are middle/upper-class.
Anyways, keep on writing bud.

Hey bro.
Thanks so much for the comment. Really appreciate it.
I feel like I have held myself back from a great deal of things as well. I think it is fear that holds people back. It is irrational like you say, because you know there is a safety net waiting to catch you if things go “south”. When we are born we have two fears and two fears alone. Fear of falling and loud noises. That is it. All our other fears are built up in our heads through social conditioning and other external influences. All fear can be eliminated with the proper techniques and training.
Some times, by confronting the fear head on, we perform at our very best and we excel. Some people crumble. I guess if we want to get good at anything or want to go anywhere we have to confront that fear head on.
In your case and mine, I think our fear is a fear of failure a fear of rejection and looking silly. Maybe it’s time to strap on a pair and go for things?
If you stay in India beyond xmas, I would seriously consider heading out there and keeping you company bud.

Alex, Sorry to hear about your girl. As with many things in life you must say good bye to some of the things you hold close in order to step out or up to the next stage in life. You are a very intelligent young man with a bright future. I agree with you “Get Good At One Thing.”
As you know, I have been in marketing for many years and have found myself working across so many niches’ that it has been hard to succeed at just one.
I have seen your talent in writing, in speaking and teaching. Remember you let me review your IM lessons. Your sincerity is evident in all three areas and there is no doubting where your heart is. I believe that all you need is one success in IM to prove to yourself what gifts you hold. You have the knowledge and skills to bring success to the company of your boss. This same knowledge and skills along with the ability to be yourself in your own business is going to take you to a level that you have only dreamed.
Get Good At One Thing! The question you must answer is, What will this one thing be? You have everything you need to work with and all you have to do is decide which thing you are going to focus on.
Your blog is inspiration to me and I am sure others agree..

Lovely post Al!!
Don’t be concerned about putting your thoughts down on this blog – it shows that you are a human being and not some cold businessman out to make a few quid.
Totally agree with you about the moral side of this business. As you know, I feel the same way.
I’m not a religious person and am 99% sure that death is the end for us all but I don’t want to risk the chance that if I’m a naughty boy there will be a devil waiting for me when I pop my clogs sharpening a pitchfork with my name on it – LOL!!
In all seriousness though, I just don’t understand people with the ‘rip off’ mentality. Surely it’s far better to try and give value with our products/services.
And for selfish reasons, it makes you feel good about yourself if you’ve truly helped someone and they let you know about it.

Hi Eddy,
Thanks so much for the comment. I completely agree with what you are saying (but you already knew that from a few rants in the past).
More than anything, in the long run, I genuinely believe that there is more money and success to be gained from doing things right and giving the best you possibly can to people in everything you do. There are a lot of people who disagree. My Dad is one of them. He laughs at my moral stance and laughs how I won’t make easy money because of my morals. I am not saying he thinks I should scam people, I think he doesn’t understand why I don’t go out there and “get mine”.
Weird.

Hi Will.
Wasn’t sure whether you still read this! Really good to see you are still around. I always appreciate your comments feedback and thoughts.
As usual, you are overly generous with your words and compliments. The funny thing is, I used to have a lot of self-belief and was ready to take on the World. This has been eroded slightly through working at the company I am at. I feel my boss doesn’t really value my input or thoughts and seldom listens to the concerns of the staff. Slowly but surely I have grown used to accepting less. I know the old Alex from Uni and school would probably kick my ass if he saw what had become of me today.
An old friend rang me recently and slapped some reality into me. Slowly I am coming round to the idea that I maybe able to do something off my own back and you are exactly right, I am currently looking to find that one thing I might be good at or could do. It’s not just about making money, it’s about being happy enriching your life and the lives of others around you. I passionately believe if you do something right and create something of quality you will have customers, fans and friends for life.
The last six months I had lost all my vision for myself, but I am starting to get that back, and it does feel good.
Will, your comments mean a lot to me, I always appreciate your insights and I thank you for reading and commenting on this blog, but more importantly for being a good friend.
